Our story
Genium Celler was founded in 2002 as the result of the coming together of several families with a long tradition of vineyard cultivation in the village of Poboleda, located in the prestigious Priorat region.
This collective project was driven by a shared passion for producing quality wines, using grapes from their own vineyards and under the meticulous supervision of winemaker Roser Amorós.
The location of the winery, in the ground floor of a house in the center of the village, is significant, as this building was the first settlement of the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei, bringing a sense of history and tradition to the project.
The Vineyards
The vineyards of Genium Celler are all owned by the partners, with a majority of Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan) varieties, and smaller proportions of Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon for the red wines.
For the white wines, Pedro Ximénez and Garnacha Blanca (White Grenache) are used. Many of these vineyards are on steep slopes with a 45-degree incline and were planted between 1910 and 1970, producing very low yields that do not exceed 500 grams per vine. Other vineyards, planted on terraces, date from the 1980s to the present.
A significant portion of Genium Celler’s production is certified and recognized by the Catalan Council for Organic Production (CCPAE), producing an organic wine that reflects the commitment to sustainability.
The vineyard philosophy focuses on producing grapes exclusively for Genium Celler wines, dedicating all efforts to achieving the highest quality.
Thus, the old hillside vineyards continue to be cultivated, despite their low yields and high associated costs.
In the vineyard work, short pruning is carried out to reduce production, along with green pruning and grape thinning, always aiming to obtain grapes of the highest quality with strong mineral characteristics.
